Separating these finances is not only good business practice, but will organize your home business especially when it comes to tax time. Make sure to keep track of any business expenses you have so you can deduct them at tax time.
You need to keep the paper receipts to verify your expenses. You can also track these expenses in financial software programs such as Quicken and Microsoft money. When you organize your home business is to see if you need a business license. You also want to figure out what type of business you are going to be.
For example, are you going to be a corporation, sole proprietor, or LLC? Discuss this issue, as well as taxes and business license issue, with your accountant and tax attorney. They will make that you have all your legal bases covered.
The next step in organizing your home business is to set up your office. Find a desk and chair that are comfortable. Don’t skip on the chair because you will be in it many hours a day. Invest in shelving, storage bins, and baskets to organize your office documents and supplies. You will most likely need a computer. If you don’t have one already, a lap top is a great choice because it is portable. Invest in a printer, fax, and scanner.
Don’t forget to purpose a shredder so you can easily shred sensitive documents. Also make sure that you have a dedicated fax line and separate phone line. Don’t forget that you will need postage supplies. You can order stamps online and virtually any office supplies you need.
For example, you may need business envelopes, stationery, and mailing labels. You can order these cheaply from a variety of online retailers. Congratulate yourself on your home business venture and make sure that you organize your home business from day one.
